Oceanmax Among Auckland’s Top Businesses
The small but growing marine coatings company enjoys a big night, named finalists in three Westpac Auckland Business Award categories.
West Auckland, 16 August 2018—Last night, more than 70 people representing dozens of local businesses gathered at the Boat House at the Riverhead tavern to hear if they had made the list of North–West regional finalists in this year’s Westpac Auckland Business Awards. Among these hopefuls was marine company Oceanmax, who were delighted to learn that they were nominated in two of three categories they had entered, Excellence in International Trade and Excellence in Customer Service Delivery, as well as a “bonus category,” Excellence in Community Contribution.
The news was particularly gratifying for managing director Clint Jones, who was unaware that Oceanmax had entered the competition until quite late in the game; his marketing team submitted their entry covertly as a surprise back in June.
“It wasn’t until I received the e-mail requesting a judges’ visit that we decided to break the news to Clint,” said marketing manager Nona Pedersen, who thanked everyone on the team for making the result possible.
Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett commented in his opening remarks that companies had to be brave to enter these awards and “put themselves out there.” Clint echoed his thoughts:
“The team at Oceanmax were brave, because they felt confident enough and empowered enough to enter on their own. Being named a finalist in the Community Contribution category was the icing on the cake.”

Any Auckland-area business of any size can enter up to three of seven award categories, the remaining five being Excellence in Innovation, Best Emerging Business, Excellence in Marketing, Employer of the Year, and Excellence in Strategy & Planning. A Westpac Supreme Business is chosen from the winners of these seven categories, which are also by divided by region: North–West, Central, and South–East.
Other nominees Oceanmax is going up against include asBUILT Ltd, Auckland BioSciences, Denture Tech Ltd, Earth Stability Ltd, ICB Retaining & Construction Ltd, Skydive Auckland STAAH Ltd, and Unleashed Software. Category sponsors include Air New Zealand, Barfoot & Thompson, Benefitz, Business North Harbour, Massey University and Ports of Auckland.
North–West regional winners will be announced on Wednesday, 3 October at a black-tie gala dinner held at Albany’s North Harbour Stadium. The Westpac Supreme Business winner will be awarded on 14 November, details to be announced.
