CRC Bay of Islands Sailing Week kicks off 23 January with the highly anticipated New Zealand Millennium Cup, the first superyacht regatta of the season. Defending champion Tawera will be up against five contenders, including the returning 33.8-metre Silvertip and 39.7-metre Janice of Wyoming. Oceanmax, the makers of the foul-release coating Propspeed, is proud to be a “friends of the industry” sponsor, attending the regatta for the second time.

Last year, Oceanmax’s own Chris Gibbs crewed racing yacht Steinlager 2 in the Pacific Division, defeating Antaeus to win the first race. Unable to run the handicap down the following two days, they were ultimately bested by Antaeus, with an overall 2-1 result.

Despite the loss, Chris recalls “amazing races with incredible boats in an idyllic location. The atmosphere and fun rivalries made for an unforgettable and very successful event.”

This year’s regatta, its 10th outing, consists solely of superyachts but is sure to be a battle worth watching. Three days of world-class racing begin 24 January at 11.30am. See you there!
