Keeping Sea Strainers Clean

Clogged sea strainers giving you the blues? Spend less time cleaning and improve your water throughput and engine performance with Propspeed.

Sea strainer blockages can be a headache on vessels of any size. Keeping your sea strainers clean not only optimizes water flow but also prevents impurities and marine growth from interfering with expensive equipment, causing problems as serious as engine overheating. Signs your sea strainers may be clogged: if your engine sounds louder on startup or emits more exhaust than normal. Proper exhaust flow should be almost immediate once you’ve started your engine. Also check your oil pressure.

Some boaters in the northeastern United States report having to clean their sea strainers weekly due to thick eel grass, high spring tides dragging weeds from the shore back to sea, and summertime slime. While you may not be in that same boat, chances are your sea strainers could be a lot cleaner, and who wants to spend that much time cleaning? Plus, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The Oceanmax team constantly receives glowing feedback from superyacht captains who now regularly use our Propspeed foul-release system to keep their sea strainer baskets clean, thereby lowering maintenance costs. With the high volume of water continuously being pumped through these strainers, Propspeed’s self-cleaning ability enables unrestricted water flow for optimal vessel performance.

Protecting your sea strainers with Propspeed foul-release coating can improve performance and save you time and money

These photos of a superyacht’s sea strainers were snapped while they were drying in a boatyard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

To keep your sea strainers performing at their peak, we recommend the use of Propspeed foul-release coating. Sea strainers are just one of the many possible uses of Propspeed, which has been used with excellent results on, of course, propellers as well as drive shafts, trim tabs, swim platforms and pretty much any metal under the waterline.

For more ways to improve your vessel’s performance with Propspeed, talk to your local boatyard applicator or distributor. Every applicator on our finder tool has been trained to our industry-leading standard and awarded the Propspeed gold seal of approval.
